About Us: Our History

The House

Dickerson Children's Advocacy Center (DCAC), was founded at 1615 Augusta Road, West Columbia, in a home that began as the Ludeke Touring Home home in the 1940's. The home was purchased by Nettie Dickerson, where she lived for many years with her husband, raising her three children.

The Task Force

In the early 1990's, a task force of community professionals began discussing the need for a children's advocacy center. A member of the task force approached Nettie about utilizing the house, which she dedicationhad leased to the S.C. Department of Mental Health, for their new center. Unsure of her decision, that same night she watched the movie "Forrest Gump" and realized that the child abuse in the film was a message to her to allow her home to be used to assist children who have been victims of abuse. In February 1995, the Lexington County Children's Center was born.

2015 - 20 Years Later

In the 20 years since its beginning, the Center has served thousands of children and their family members. In a tribute to the generosity for the caring Dickerson family, the Center changed its name and today is know as the Dickerson Children's Advocacy Center. While the old house served the children of West Columbia, Cayce, and Lexington County well for over 20 years, DCAC is proud to now be located in a new facility in the Town of Lexington as of February 2016.

DCAC is dedicated to serving children who are in need of assistance during the investigation and treatment of physical and sexual abuse, drug endangerment, and the witnessing of violence. We are here to help make painful moments in the lives of these children and their families a little easier to bear. In order to accomplish this, we look to individuals, businesses, and our community to help make this need a reality. We hold several fundraising events during the year and have a cookbook for sale that all help move us forward to better help the children in our community who are in need of healing.
